About the Zoo & Aquarium Professional Troublemaker of the Year Program
The Zoo & Aquarium Professional Troublemaker of the Year program is designed to celebrate and encourage bold, transformative leadership within zoos and aquariums. This initiative, a partnership of TESSERE and SSA Group, recognizes individuals who challenge conventional thinking and actively push the boundaries of what’s possible in the pursuit of a thriving planet for both people and wildlife.
As the world evolves, so too must the practices and systems within zoos and aquariums. True progress requires more than incremental change; it demands disruption and innovation. Professional troublemakers are those who ask the hard questions—”why” and “what if”—and are willing to shake the foundations of established norms to drive meaningful change. These leaders foster psychological safety, experiment boldly, and embrace transparency to advance collective learning and solutions.
Each year, we honor two outstanding individuals through this program:
The Zoo & Aquarium Professional Troublemaker of the Year, recognizing established leaders who are making significant waves in their organizations and throughout the community.
The Emerging Professional Troublemaker of the Year, celebrating rising stars who are already challenging the status quo and demonstrating a commitment to transformation.
These honorees are awarded sponsored attendance to the ECHO conference, where they will join a community of like-minded innovators—professionals who, like them, are driven by a deep commitment to shaping a better future for wildlife and people.
Change is inevitable, but it takes courageous leaders to steer that change in the right direction. This program celebrates those leaders—the professional troublemakers who, through their curiosity, risk-taking, and dedication, act as catalysts for a future that reflects our shared vision of a sustainable, thriving planet.

Help us identify the next visionary leaders by nominating candidates for the 2025 Professional Troublemakers of the Year! The nomination period runs from March to April, during which peers are invited to submit names of those who exemplify bold leadership and transformative change within the zoo and aquarium community.
Each nomination will be reviewed by a committee of peers, using a detailed rubric that evaluates nominees based on:

- Challenging Assumptions
- Embracing Transparency and Collective Learning
- Encouraging Productive Dialogue and Experimentation
- Acting as a Catalyst for Meaningful Change
Honorees will be announced in September and will receive sponsored attendance to the following summer’s ECHO conference, where they will join a community of thought leaders dedicated to driving meaningful, lasting transformation.
